Written on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival while I was in Edinburgh, Same Moon at West Lake grew from a sense of distance and homesickness. I imagined people at Hangzhou’s West Lake looking up at the same moon, and shaped the piece around that shared image. Pipa, dizi, xun and xiao are woven together with a Western string ensemble, creating a music world that connects place, memory and cultural distance.
